What is Tempeh Sausage

Tempeh is a soy-based, fermented food product that has a meaty texture and can take on a lot of flavor. Tempeh traditionally comes in a rectangular shape. You can easily crumble it up and add the flavors you associate with spicy Italian sausage to make tempeh sausage.

Is Tempeh Sausage Vegan?

Absolutely, tempeh is vegan – so as long as you keep the spices and sauces you add to flavor it vegan there should be no worries. You can flavor tempeh with any herb or spice your heart desires to make it taste sweet, spicy or herbaceous.

Spicy Italian Tempeh

When I think of spicy Italian sausage, my memory goes to the meat counter and bright red links. Going plant-based, I realized the meat was just the canvas, it’s the flavors that make the item, so I’ve replaced the meat with tempeh, and added the same spices that conjure spicy grilled sausage; fresh ground fennel seed, crushed red pepper, garlic and Italian herbs.

Tempeh on Pizza

My primary use for this has been as a pizza topping, because spicy sausage and black olives… but you could throw this style tempeh sausage with some pasta for an arrabiata or in a soup. If you are making pizza, you should try my easy thin crust pizza dough recipe.
